An air-cooled condenser is a heat exchanger that removes heat from a substance (such as refrigerant or steam) by shifting it to ambient air flowing over the condenser coils. Unlike water-cooled condensers, which utilize water as a cooling medium, air-cooled condensers depend on forced or natural airflow for cooling.

Air-cooled condensers require no water for their operation, unlike water-cooled condensers, which need substantial amounts of water. This is particularly crucial in regions facing water scarcity or where water resources are limited. Industries and businesses are increasingly opting for air-cooled condensers to minimize water consumption and reduce their environmental impact.

Manufacturers produce the components and assemble the units for air-cooled condenser systems. They leverage advanced manufacturing technologies and materials to create modern, high-performance condensers that meet the evolving needs of industries such as power generation, HVAC, and refrigeration. Technology providers develop and supply innovative technologies and components used in modern air-cooled condenser systems. This includes advancements in heat exchanger design, fan technology, control systems, and corrosion-resistant materials that enhance efficiency, reliability, and durability.

In May 2023, IWC launched a new series of air-cooled condensers, including an induced air-cooled condenser and a compressed air-cooled condenser. Since climate action is at the core of IWC's growth strategy, the company plans to produce an air-cooled condenser, which aims to reduce environmental impact by reducing water use, energy use and carbon dioxide emissions.

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted global supply chains, causing delays in the procurement of raw materials, components, and equipment necessary for manufacturing air-cooled condensers. This led to production slowdowns and shortages, affecting the availability of condenser units and components. Many industries, such as hospitality, commercial real estate, and manufacturing, experienced reduced activity or temporary closures due to lockdown measures and economic uncertainty. As a result, the demand for air-cooled condensers in these sectors declined, leading to decreased sales and project cancellations or postponements.

 ANALYSIS BY TYPE

The market is segmented by type into A-frame air-cooled condensers, V-frame air-cooled condensers, and horizontal. The A-frame air-cooled condensers segment dominates the market and is expected to grow significantly during the forecast period. A-frame air-cooled condensers are designed to maximize heat transfer efficiency, making them suitable for a wide range of applications across various industries. Their A-frame configuration allows for optimal airflow and surface area for heat dissipation, resulting in efficient cooling performance.

The V-shaped configuration facilitates better airflow distribution and increased surface area for heat dissipation, leading to improved cooling performance compared to other designs.

ANALYSIS BY APPLICATION

Based on the application, the market is categorized into residential, commercial, and industrial. The industrial segment is one of the major applications of the air-cooled condenser. Industries, such as petrochemicals, power generation, oil & gas, chemicals, and manufacturing require efficient heat exchange solutions for various processes and equipment.

Commercial buildings comprising offices, retail spaces, and hotels depend heavily on air-cooled condensers for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems. Air-cooled condensers reject heat from air conditioning units, maintaining indoor temperatures for occupants.

REGIONAL ANALYSIS

The air cool condensers market is studied across North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America, and the Middle East & Africa. Asia Pacific is expected to become a major region in the market, and it is also expected to grow considerably in the coming years. The region is experiencing rapid urbanization and industrialization, leading to increased demand for air-cooled condensers in various sectors, such as power generation, manufacturing, petrochemicals, and commercial buildings. As urban populations grow and industrial activities expand, there is a significant need for efficient cooling solutions to support infrastructure development and economic growth.

North America has a well-developed industrial and commercial sector, including power generation, petrochemicals, manufacturing, data centers, and commercial buildings. These industries have been using air-cooled condensers for decades, contributing to the maturity of the market.

KEY INDUSTRY DEVELOPMENTS

  • In October 2023, NTPC commissioned India's first Air Cooled Condenser Supercritical Plant to demonstrate its commitment to water conservation through reduction, reuse and recycling. NTPC, the country's largest integrated power company, has started commercial operation of the first 660 MW unit at North Karanpura (3*660 MW), Jharkhand. This project is designed using an Air-Cooled Condenser (ACC) with almost 1/3 the water footprint of a traditional Water-Cooled Condenser (WCC).

  • In June 2020, SPIG S.p.A., Babcock and Wilcox Enterprises, Inc. ("BandW") subsidiary, inked a contract with SUEZ RV Energie to upgrade the air-cooled condenser for its FENIIX waste-to-energy facility in Rambervillers, France. FENIIX is an urban waste energy recovery plant collected by EVODIA, a joint association of departments that processes all municipal waste in the Vosges department.
