North America dominated the aircraft component mro market with a market share of 30.5% in 2023.

The aircraft component Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO) refers to providing maintenance, repair, and overhaul to the major components of an aircraft. MRO delivers activity for Auxiliary Power Units (APU), mechanical actuators, landing gears, avionics, and fuel system of the aircraft. The MRO services improve the life-span and airworthiness of the aircraft. The aircraft component MRO services improve the efficiency and reliability of the aircraft. These factors are anticipated to drive the market and accentuate commercial airlines' demand for aircraft component MRO service. Additionally, the progression of commercial aviation MRO services in growing economies, such as India and China, is predicted to boost the market. Key companies, such as Air France Industries, KLM Engineering & Maintenance, Delta TechOps, and FL Technics, provide cost-efficient MRO services. The air fleet and aircraft deliveries growth is expected to increase the market size in the forecast period. The COVID-19 pandemic caused a drastic decline in the aircraft component MRO market share due to sudden operations halt. The engineers and staff associated with the maintenance, repair, and overhaul activities were asked to refrain from coming to the facility due to the fear of contracting the coronavirus.

Aircraft Component MRO Market Trends

Growing Use of Predictive and Preventive Maintenance

Recently, a trend for predictive and preventive maintenance has gained traction due to the proliferation of accurate and efficient MRO service provision. Predictive maintenance is a condition-based maintenance that involves equipment condition monitoring and performance monitoring during regular operations to limit the chances of a breakdown. Preventive maintenance refers to performing regularly scheduled maintenance activities to help limit unexpected failures in the future. These activities and initiatives are a growing trend in the MRO market and are expected to boost the overall market due to widespread adoption. For instance,

  • In November 2023, Vietnam Airlines signed a long-term agreement with Airbus for the Skywise Predictive Maintenance (SPM) digital solution. The long-term agreement covers up to 65 A321 Family aircraft (A321ceo and A321neo).

Aircraft Component MRO Market Growth Factors

Rising Use of Emerging Technology and Non-Destructive Testing Supports Market Growth

A recent trend of emerging technology and non-destructive testing for inspection and repair is observed since major service providers globally opt for more technologically advanced testing. Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) is an effective method to detect minor imperfections or damages in aerospace materials or components throughout their operational life without materially affecting the integrity of the tested item. Therefore, considering the excellent testing benefits of the latest technology, the market is expected to grow exponentially over the forecast period.

Growth in Aircraft Deliveries and Air Fleet Expansion to Drive Market Growth

The size of a fleet is positively correlated with global MRO demand. As a result, a rise in MRO demand is likely in the near future as fleet sizes continue to grow. A constant rise in air travel in developing countries is predicted to accentuate the demand for new aircraft in major countries. The cost of MRO software adds up for roughly 1/5th of the operational costs of the airline. A rise is to be experienced by the passenger-growth trend, with engines attracting the bulk of the maintenance prices. With aircraft maintenance a priority, air operators have choices among independent MROs, components, and aircraft OEMs. Global airlines aim to expand their aircraft fleet size due to the growing air passenger traffic. The market growth in the forecast period is due to the increasing number of aircraft fleets. The MRO sector is predicted to exhibit a strady growth throughout the forecast period owing to rising demand for growing aircraft fleets and a growth in air travel.

RESTRAINING FACTORS

High Cost and Regulations to Cause a Delay and Limit Market Growth

Aircraft component MRO players are majorly targeting the annual OEM material price increase and the restrictions OEMs have placed on the direct sale of OEM-designed parts due to their IP ownership for rapid increase in the price of parts. Additionally, OEMs charge exorbitant consultancy fees, making it difficult for MRO players to diversify and expand their services. These aspects suggest that this pattern is likely to continue in the longer run, thereby making high costs and restrictions on airworthiness a significant hindrance to the aircraft component MRO market growth.
