The automotive in-wheel hub motor is also known as an automotive hub motor. This electrical motor is attached to the wheels of an automotive (2 rear wheels or all four wheels). This motor drives the vehicle with flexibility and high efficiency. Also, the electrical motor is less mechanically complex as compared to the traditional conventional motor.

Globally, the price of fuels is increasing day by day, which is affecting the production of automobiles owing to high costs and fuel inefficiency. Moreover, the increasing population, an expanding number of vehicles are leading to the global warming crises, high emission of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, and also its adverse health effects on people. All these factors are driving the adoption of electric vehicles in the automotive industry. Furthermore, the governments across the globe are initiating various schemes and encouraging people citizens to opt for environment-friendly and sustainable sources of energy to tackle the rising environmental challenges. The in-wheel hub motor eliminates the axles, powertrain, driveline, and transmission. These factors are likely to reduce mechanical losses essential in all components between the engine and wheel, thereby resulting in lesser noise generation and a quieter running vehicle.

Market Segmentation

Globally, the in-wheel hub motor market has been segmented by vehicle type, by power input, By cooling agent type, By end use type and by region. By vehicle type, the market is further segmented into passenger cars and commercial vehicles. The electric passenger car holds the largest market share in the global in-wheel hub motor market and is expected to dominate the market in the forecast period owing to high torque, low rpm, increased power, and improvement in fuel efficiency. Also, the increasing support and help from governments through initiatives, subsidies are driving the sales of electric passenger cars to a great extent. The power input type is divided into three ranges, such as up to 60 K.W., 60-90 KW and above 90 K.W. range. The 60-90 KW output power range for in-wheel hub motor is the maximum range used in the motors. However, the power range above 90 K.W. is showing steady growth as it has a drawback of its heavyweight and high-cost structure. The power range up to 60 K.W. is also used mainly in vehicles. By cooling agent type, there are two types of cooling agents used in the hub motor. The majorly used type is the liquid cooling agent. The liquid cooling is widely used in the hub motors. By end use type, the on-road vehicles majorly use the hub motor in their wheels as compared to off-road vehicles. Sports cars, and top-end passenger cars are fitted with the hub motor in the wheels. On the utility basis, the count of hub motor can range from two motors in the rear wheel to four motors in all wheels each.

Regional Analysis:

Geographically, the in-wheel hub motor market is segmented into North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and the rest of the world. The Asia Pacific holds the largest market share of the global in-wheel hub motor market and is expected to dominate in the forecast period. China, among other countries in the region, has the maximum production of electric vehicles owing to the massive provision of subsidies from the government to manufacture electric vehicles and rise in the import and export. This has ultimately affected the growth of electric vehicle sales in this country. All these factors are eventually propelling the growth of the in-wheel hub motor market. India is also projected to grow in the in-wheel hub motor market in the forecast period owing to the adoption of sustainable energy sources. Also, companies are investing heavily in manufacturing electric vehicles. This will increase the share of electric vehicles and ultimately give rise to the in-wheel hub motor market.
