A dry battery is a device consisting of more than one electrochemical cell that converts stored chemical energy into electrical energy. It contains an electrolyte that is in a paste or other wet medium. A typical dry battery contains a zinc anode and a carbon cathode inside a crucial rod. Cadmium, lead, nickel, carbon, and zinc are used to make different dry cell designs and properties, and some designs are better suited for certain devices than others.

A conventional battery (dry cell) is a device that converts chemical energy into electrical energy. Dry cells are widely used in toys, flashlights, portable radios, cameras, hearing aids, and other commonly used devices. The battery consists of a zinc outer shell (negativeelectrode) and a carbon rod in the middle of the cell (positive electrode), and the space between them is filled with electrolyte paste. When used, an electrolyte consisting of powdered carbon, manganese dioxide, ammonia, and zinc chloride causes electrons to flow and produce electricity.

  • In June 2023, Volkswagen subsidiary PowerCo SE planned to introduce the dry coating process at its battery cell production plants in Europe and North America. Tesla pioneered a new battery manufacturing process producing 4680 cells.

Any devices capable of converting their chemical energy into electrical energy through reduction-oxidation (redox) reactions involving active materials commonly known as electrodes are now pedagogically known as batteries. Basically, a battery contains one or more identical cells, each of which stores electricity as chemical energy on two electrodes separated by an electrolyte.

The COVID-19 pandemic affected the dry cell market due to delays in car projects, shutdowns of production plants, and dried-up investments. In addition, the depth and concentration of the battery industry value chain vary from country to country, and disruptions have occurred.

ANALYSIS BY TYPE

Based on type, the market is divided into alkaline batterry, carbon zinc batterry, and others. The alkaline batterry segment dominates the market. Alkaline batteries have favorable characteristics, such as higher capacity, longer life, and discharge resistance. These batteries are available in different sizes (AAA, AA, C, D, and 9V). They are suitable for heavy-duty and general use, such as remote controls, watches, radios, bluetooth, mouse, electronic toys, electric shavers, and scissors. Carbon-zinc batteries are inexpensive and come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and capacities. Zinc chloride batteries have sophisticated energy density and high efficiency under severe discharge conditions. Others include zinc-air batteries and silver oxide batteries, which are used occasionally.

ANALYSIS BY CELL TYPE

Based on cell type, the market is bifurcated into primary and secondary. The secondary segment is dominant in the market share. The second type is rechargeable and is called a secondary cell. Examples of secondary cells are nickel-cadmium (NiCd), lead-acid, and lithium-ion cells. Secondary cells are similar to batteries in that they produce electricity but require the constant addition of fuel and oxidizer. Primary cells are "disposable" and cannot be recharged. Dry cells and (most) alkaline batteries are examples of primary batteries.

ANALYSIS BY APPLICATION

Based on application, the market is segmented into consumer electronics, remote control, and others. The consumer electronics segment holds a large market share in the dry cell battery market. Consumer electronics is a crucial market segment in the global dry cell market, as alkaline batteries play a key role in powering many devices needed in everyday life. Dry batteries are widely used in consumer electronics and many appliances. Portable devices such as remote controls, toys & controls, and digital cameras use many dry cell batteries.

REGIONAL ANALYSIS

The dry cell battery market has been studied across North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America, and the Middle East & Africa.

North America captures the largest market share of the market. Growing investments in the region are a key asset for the growth of dry-cell batteries. For instance, Ford and CATL announced in February 2022 that they will build a USD 3.5 billion 35 GWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) plant in Michigan by 2026. Furthermore, BMW Group and Envision AESC announced in October 2022 that they will build a USD 700 million 30 GWh electric battery factory in South Carolina, release date undamaged. Moreover, Canadian battery manufacturer Electrovaya is building the first U.S. electric battery factory in New York state with a capacity of about 1 GWh. The USD 75 million plant is scheduled to open in the fall of 2023.

Europe is also one of the important regions where laws are being passed for sustainable growth of the dry cell battery market. The European Parliament and the Council approved the new battery regulation on 12 July 2023. The new battery regulation ensures that in the future, the batteries will have a low carbon footprint, use as few harmful substances as possible, require fewer raw materials from countries outside the EU, and be widely collected, recycled, and recycled in Europe. It maintains the transition to a circular economy, increases the refuge of the supply of raw materials and energy, and increases the strategic autonomy of the EU.

Asia Pacific is growing in home-grown use of dry cell batteries in the manufacturing of consumer electronics in countries, such as China, Japan, South Korea, and India. Latin America is a beginner in the market, with few investments in opportunities in the region. In the Middle East & Africa, investments are being made in terms of rechargeable batteries in controls, toys, and consumer electronics, such as cameras and flashlights.

KEY INDUSTRY DEVELOPMENTS

  • In January 2024, Boston Solar, a subsidiary of SinglePoint, partnered with Energizer Solar to bring the partnership's home battery solution to the North American market. Previously introduced to the Australian, German, and U.K. markets, the collaboration offers a number of solar products and enables Boston Solar to produce energy storage systems for new and existing customers.

  • In November 2023, Panasonic Energy Co., Ltd. announced that the company had completed the dry cell factory relocation project. The Nishikinohama plant (Kaizuka City, Osaka) started full-scale production of AA, AAA, C and D alkaline batteries. This CO2-free factory, which uses clean energy efficiently, is the company's only dry battery production facility in Japan.
