Modular instruments are hardware devices, which contain numerous functional cards useful for benchtop tests and measurements. They provide high-speed data transfer, which can be categorized into VXI, PXI, AXIe, and others. They are also known as faceless instruments as they aren’t deployed with any user interface. Modular instruments are programmed with test program, called drivers, to enable data transfer and communication between other instruments.

Increasing demand and implementation of 5G and LTE is expected to drive the market across telecommunication, electronics and semiconductors, and defense & aerospace industries. Modular instruments have numerous deployment capabilities across every industry, which enhances scalability and functionality of industry-specific IoT devices and day-to-day equipment.

  • In October 2022, Particle launched its series of LTE modules, which included cellular capabilities with an M.2 form factor for increased support. This enables enterprises to connect devices to the internet and improve production.

Impact of COVID-19 on the Modular Instruments Market

The COVID-19 pandemic caused major disruptions in supply chains of numerous industries, affecting the market significantly. It also brought in new norms such as work from home, which temporarily disabled usage of test benches and professional products. The disrupted supply chain during the pandemic resulted in slight decline in revenues during 2019 - 2020, but these conditions improved after Q3 2021. This was a result of accessible nation borders and relaxed limitations on logistics and travel.

There was a significant impact on the modular instruments market due to the supply shortage of semiconductors among other principal electronic components. Nearly, every industry sector, which implemented semiconductors in their product offerings, faced a major decline in their business growth and revenue. As the restrictions were uplifted, the semi-conductor distribution network is expected to improve significantly in the coming years.

  • For instance, in May 2020, National Instruments prioritized the deployment of emerging technologies such as fabric technologies and washable PPE. The company displayed a slight decline in YoY growth, while generating USD 309 million, as a result of strategically deploying its semiconductors.

Key Insights

The report will cover the following key insights:

  • Micro & macroeconomic indicators

  • Drivers, restraints, trends, and opportunities

  • Business strategies adopted by the key players

  • Impact of COVID-19 on global modular instruments market

  • Consolidated SWOT analysis of key players

Analysis by Type

VXI and PXI serve as sole instrument buses with variations in data transfer rates and system compatibility. VXI can transfer data that is 8, 16, and 32 bits wide, while PXI can transfer data that is 8, 16, 32, and 64 bits wide. AdvancedTCA Extensions for Instrumentation and Test (AXIe) support 32 bit and 64 bit protocols, and is commonly used in industrial test benches. PCIe, which is a branched data transfer protocol of PXI, is also deployed across industries.

USB-based instruments utilize USB 3.0 interface, while providing portable chassis, simple setup, and multiple synchronized measurements. Data Acquisition Systems (DAQ) utilize VXI and LXI standards and USB integration to cater to clientele demands.
