Report Format: PDF | Published Date: Ongoing | Report ID: FBI104946 | Status : UpcomingPower resistors are the equipment used in power generation and distribution, high-voltage applications, control systems, and other power system applications. It allows the fault current to flow to protective relays and limits the value to prevent damage to power generation or distribution equipment. Power resistors are used in material handling and fabrication equipment, elevators, escalators, cranes, power inverters, and industrial drives. In an electric circuit, power resistors endure and distribute a huge amount of power. This power dissipation by a power resistor results in an accelerated increase in temperature, after which the power resistor starts dissipating power through the circuit board and the surrounding atmosphere.
Power resistors are often coupled with heat sinks to facilitate the efficient dissipation of high power. Currently, the market players in the power resistor market are focusing on developing power resistors that dissipate a huge amount of power, while keeping their size as small as possible. The power resistor market is gaining an advantage due to development in the industries; especially the electrical industries where this type of power resistors are used to control and distribute the current efficiently.
Based on the type, the global power resistor market is segmented into nichrome wire resistors, carbon composite resistors, metal film resistors, film resistors, cement resistors, wire wound resistors, and others. Carbon composite resistors are the most common type of resistors used in electrical and electronic circuits. Its appropriate ratio of carbon dust to ceramic determines the overall resistive value of the mixture. Also higher the ratio of carbon, the lower is the overall resistance. Carbon Composites can withstand high energy pulses and are considerably economical as compared to others.
Based on the mounting, the global power resistor market is segmented into the axial lead, tubular, heat sinkable, and surface mount. Surface-mount resistors provide considerable advantages in terms of space-saving and automated manufacture of printed circuit boards. They enable much faster and more reliable construction of electronic printed circuit boards.
Based on the material, the global power resistor market is segmented into carbon film, metal oxide, metal alloy, and others. Carbon film material holds the majority of the share in the market as it is vastly used in the resistor in the electrical industries which are employed in various equipment and electrical gadgets followed by metal oxide.
Based on the application, the global power resistor market is segmented into, neutral grounding resistors, load banks, engine braking, and others. Neutral grounding resistors are one of the common types of resistor applications used in the AC distribution networks. They are a key element in good electrical substation design. The materials used are capable of resisting high temperatures and operating. They are used to limit the fault current for the safety of equipment and personnel in industrial systems.
The key market driver is increasing demand for electricity owing to the rise in population at an exponential rate over the last decade. Other factors include growth in industrialization especially in the electrical industries and manufacturing industries where power/electricity is an integral part of basic requirements.
The key market restraint is limited resistance is available to the resistor to limit a certain amount of current depending upon its power as designed. Other factors restraining the market are it is very difficult to arrange or fix the resistor in a complex connection, with the requirement of good quality of wires to distribute the current.
Key Players Covered:
Some of the major companies in the power resistor market are Ohmite Manufacturing, TE Connectivity, RiedonInc.,Cressall Resistors Ltd., Metallux, AVX Corporation, Bourns, Inc., COUDOINT, Danotherm Electric A/S, MCB Industrie, Michael Koch GmbH, Yageo Corporation, Vishay Intertechnology, Inc.

Key Industry Developments
- In July 2018, Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. introduced a new AEC-Q200 qualified thick film power resistor deaturing a clip mount TO247 package for direct mounting on a heatsink. For automotive applications, the Vishay Sfernice LTO 150 offered industry- high power dissipation of 150W at +45 degree Celsius case temperature and an improved pulse handling capability. The device provides up to 70% higher power dissipation than competing devices in the TO247 package. This reduces the need for components to cool the resistor- saving board space, simplifying layouts, and reducing overall solution costs.
- In August 2018, TT Electronics announced a series of low profile( 2mm) high power resistors for use on heatsinks. Called, WDBRUL, they are thick-film-on-steel resistors, developed from the WDBR series, with creepage, clearances and power ratings assessed in accordance with the requirements of UL508. Applications are foreseen in motor drive inverters, dynamic braking,in-rush current limiting, heaters in electronic assemblies and providing over-voltage protection in wind turbines. Nine values are available 12,15,20,22,25,47,50,100,and 150 Ohms in five sizes as 170, 190, 240, 250 and 260W. These are continuous power ratings on a 25oC and rise to 660,740,850,950 and 1410W respectively with 5m/s forced air cooling.
