Ricinoleic acid is also called 12-hydroxy-9-cis-octadecenoic acid, and is a light shaded, yellowish color viscous liquid, an unsaturated omega-9 fatty acid. It is produced from the hydrolysis of castor oil. It serves as a substrate for the production of conjugated linoleic acids. Additionally, ricinoleic acid is a safe product and also non-toxic. It is used as an excellent reactant for the synthesis of various derivatives such as undecylenic acid, sebacic acid, hydroxy stearic acid (HSA), and methyl ricinoleate. It finds application in the lubricants & grease, cosmetics & personal care, surfactants, pharmaceutical, and leather applications.

The rising demand for ricinoleic acid in the cosmetics and leather applications will fuel the market growth during the forecast timeline. Ricinoleic acid has strong antibacterial properties hence, it is mostly used in various cosmetics products such as lotions, oil, and soaps. Furthermore, ricinoleic acid is also used for the treatment of leather. It offers good wetting, softness, and flexible properties to leather. These factors will fuel the growth in the ricinoleic acid market.

However, the excess consumption of ricinoleic acid leads to cause skin irritation. This further reduces its adoption in various applications and anticipated to hamper the market growth.
