A stationary diesel generator combines a diesel engine and an electric generator used to generate electricity. The stationary diesel generator has an integrated internal diesel combustion engine that ignites diesel fuel to produce energy which is converted into mechanical energy and then electricity. The devices are available in various power levels and sizes.

The stationary diesel generator market is divided into less than 60 kW, 61-1000 kW, and above 1000 kW based on type. The 61-1000 kW capacity segment is expected to dominate the market during the forecast period. The usage of the 61-1000 has increased over the past few years in various industries. This variant has several uses, and it is rising in popularity among manufacturers.

The stationary diesel generator market is divided into mining, oil and gas, construction, residential, marine, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, commercial, telecom, and others based on end-user application. The industrial segment generates the highest demand for stationary diesel generators. Industries like mining, oil and gas, petrochemical, data centers, telecommunications, manufacturing, construction, and automotive need the stationary diesel generator. They are expected to propel the market growth during the forecast period.

Based on application, the stationary diesel generator market is divided into standby power, peak shaving, and prime/continuous power. The diesel generator is a dependable source of power. It is used to generate electricity to ensure an uninterrupted power supply during power outages. It is usually used as a backup device during power outages or in areas where there is no power grid. The increasing requirement for consistent and reliable power supply, as well as the increasing incidence of power outages, are pushing the diesel generator industry.

Rapid urbanization and industrialization are rising in all areas of society. In addition, increasing residential electricity demand, the need for industrial power supply, and many other factors lead to increased demand for power generators. As a result, industries are adopting stationary generators to provide a continuous electricity supply and uninterrupted business operations. One of the main advantages of stationary generators is that they can support very high power loads for prolonged periods. Due to these factors, the stationary diesel generator market is expected to thrive during the forecast period.

The threat of substitution from battery storage systems is a significant restraint hindering the growth of the market. Wide-scale adoption of battery storage systems in remote areas acts as a barrier to the stationary diesel engine market. The battery systems, combined with solar or wind power, provide independence from rising diesel costs, handle demand during peak hours without diesel fuel consumption, reduce energy wastage through performance optimization, and store excess energy for later use. These factors will slow down the stationary diesel generator market.

Key Industry Developments

  • On February 08, 2019, Kirloskar Oil Engine Ltd. introduced its latest product range called the i-green series in Delhi. The product comes with several in-built features like remote monitoring of DG set. The remote control monitoring feature shall allow monitoring of the set transcending the barrier of place and multiple people can access the parameters on the control panel through an app on their mobile phones. The sensors in the genset give messages to the control room, service center and maintenance manager of the consumers. The DG actually does a self- diagnosis and reports problems electronically to the control room, safeguarding itself against any possible fatal eventualities.

  • In November 2018, Cummins Inc. introduced the new QSG12 50Hz diesel generator series for stationary standby and prime power applications. This series is designed for a wide variety of applications to meet diverse customer needs in different markets such as hospitals, manufacturing, commercial and industrial facilities and has a reduced noise level (down to 67Db(A) at 75%).
