"Actionable Insights to Fuel Your Growth"
Hydrodesulfurization is a chemical process used in natural gas and refined petroleum to reduce the amount of sulfur in petroleum by increasing the amount of hydrogen in the product in the presence of catalysts. This process is also used in automotive vehicles, railroads, aircraft, locomotive, ships, and residential and industrial furnaces to eliminate sulfur dioxide gaseous emissions by the use of fuels. The excessive amount of sulfur from petroleum is reduced from being poisoned, and most of the sulfur is removed using this process. The reaction takes place at elevated temperatures ranging from 300 to 400 degrees Celsius in the presence of a catalyst consisting of an alumina base with cobalt and molybdenum. This process becomes essential to prevent poisoning of petroleum, and hence as it is required in many industries to run, also it is essential for different industries that required petroleum as the co-product of the filler.
Based on type, the market is classified into load and non-load type. Load type accounts for the large share in the market than the non-load type. In the load type, molybdenum sulfide (MOS2), which is used as a catalyst is added into the process to remove the excess sulfur impurity by lowering the bond strength and facilitating sulfur vacancy formation, which thereby enhances catalytic activity. In non-load type, the catalyst is dissolved in the process and is less preferred as compared to load type. Dissolving can be ruined by impurities, if any present in the fuel, and thereby stop the working.
Based on the application, the market is segmented into diesel hydrotreat, naphtha, and others. Diesel hydrotreat leads the market. In this process, organosulfur species are removed from the diesel in high pressure, improving the diesel quality. This, treated diesel, is then used in many industries like automobile, manufacturing, oil and refineries, and food industry.
The key market driver for the market is the ability of the catalyst to remove the excessive amount of sulfur from petroleum. Excessive retention of the sulfur in the petroleum may lead to its poisoning and also affect the environment. Other drivers include the ever-increasing demand for treated petroleum or fuel in many industries like automotive vehicles, railroads, aircraft, locomotive, ships, and residential and industrial furnaces. Apart from this, the process is also used for detoxification of metals and metallic compounds, which further drives the market.
The key market restraint for the market is the low space velocity required for the process to reach equilibrium conditions, which promotes the conversions in removing hydrogen sulfide (H2S) strains. Other restraints include the complexity of the process, and the process may have a reactive effect acting with noble metals like platinum and rhenium in catalytic reforming units and for upgrading the Naptha streams octane ratings.

The global hydrodesulfurization catalyst market is studied across the different regions, Asia Pacific, North America, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East & Africa. North America leads the market and holds the major part of the hydrodesulfurization catalyst market and expected to hold its position over the coming years. The US is the leader in the manufacturing of desulfurized petroleum and various end products owing to its high refining capacity of more than 18.8 million barrels per day as per the end of 2019. Europe holds a strong position in the market due to the development of the oil and refineries and automobile industries in the country. An increase in the production of LNG and development in the automobile sector will uplift the market in the coming days. The Asia Pacific market is also seen gearing up the pace in the market due to the expansion of oil & refineries, automobiles, petrochemicals industry, and food industry. The major countries in the region are India, South Korea, and China. Also, the Asia-Pacific region has the largest oil refining capacity in the world, processing 34.15 million barrels per day in the year 2018. Latin America and Middle East & Africa regions are expected to hold a commanding position in the market as a major amount of petroleum is found in countries like Iran, Saudi Arabia, and UAE. The countries in the region are now seen focusing on increasing their refining capacity, which will drive the adoption of the hydrodesulfurization catalyst.
