Telecom Generator Market to Grow at 7.10% CAGR till 2027; Increasing Dependence on Standby Power Sources to Propel the Market

January 06, 2021 | Energy & Power

The global telecom generator market size is projected to reach USD 1.78 billion by 2027 on account of the expanding mobile network coverage worldwide, shares Fortune Business Insights™ in its report, titled “Telecom Generator Market Size, Share and COVID-19 Impact Analysis, By Fuel Type (Diesel, Gas, and Others), Power Rating (Below 75 kVA, 75-375 kVA, 375-750 kVA, and Above 750 kVA), Application (Continuous, Peak Load, and Standby) and Regional Forecast, 2020-2027”. The report states that the value of the market in 2019 stood at USD 1.20 billion and the market is expected to register a CAGR of 7.10% from 2020 to 2027.

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has dealt moderate blow to the telecom generator market growth. On the one hand, massive supply chain disruptions caused by quarantine measures and restrictions on trade and movement of people has affected production activities in the telecom sector. On the other hand, telecommunications has been certified to be a critical infrastructure by governments worldwide, which is expected to benefit this market.

Phoenix Tower International Acquires Multiple Wireless Communication Tower Sites

Phoenix Tower International, a telecommunications company based in Florida, announced the completion of its acquisition of a 100% ownership interest in the Tennessee-based wireless communication provider, Tower Ventures Holdings, in March 2020. This transaction will give Phoenix access and control of advanced wireless connectivity infrastructures and assets built by Tower Ventures across the Southern and Midwestern USA and along the Atlantic seaboard. The acquisition of the 197 wireless communication towers fortifies Phoenix’s position as one of the top private tower companies in both North and South America.

Environmental Risks Associated with Diesel Generators May Hamper Market Growth

Diesel-powered generators, though a reliable source of backup power, are known to have damaging effects on the environment and human health. A study conducted by the University of Western Australia Crawley and the University of New South Wales Sydney found that diesel exhaust emit over 40 toxic pollutants, including several carcinogenic substances such as formaldehyde, arsenic, and benzene. The overuse of these generators, especially in developing nations, where power outages are common, poses a high risk to the environment and humans, the study postulated. In Nigeria, where the study took place, 30% of households and 90% of businesses use diesel generators. A similar situation was witnessed in New Delhi, India in June 2018, when pollution levels reached record limits. According to a study by the Center for Science and Environment (CSE), where diesel generators usage exceeded 7 to 8 hours per day, approximately 1900 milligrams/normal cubic meter of Particulate matter (PM) 10 was produced during the day. In October 2020, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee banned the use of diesel generators in Delhi-NCR to manage air quality. These significant disadvantages of diesel-powered generators are likely to hamper the growth of this market during the forecast period.

5G Rollout to Spawn Numerous Growth Opportunities for Market Players

Several countries around the world are preparing the ground for the rollout of 5G infrastructures. 5G networks will require higher energy and power usage, which in turn will necessitate the employment of reliable and efficient backup power sources such as generators. The bright prospects created by 5G is prompting key players to adopt strategies to deepen their foothold in this market by diversifying their offerings, entering into collaborations and partnerships, investing in R&D, and acquiring regional companies.

Industry Development:

  • October 2019: Zain, the telecom giant in the Middle East, announced the commercial release of 5G services in Saudi Arabia. The initial phase of the company’s 5G rollout plan will entail the deployment of a 2,000 towers, covering an area of 20 cities across Saudi Arabia.
